The Daunting Challenges of State Building in Afghanistan

Dr. Antonio Giustozzi is Research Fellow at the Crisis States Research Centre (LSE, London), where he runs a project on Afghanistan. He is author of 'War, politics and society in Afghanistan, 1978-1992' (Georgetown University Press, 2000), and of the forthcoming 'Kuran, Kalashnikov and laptop: the Neo-Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan, 2002-2007' (Columbia University Press, 2007).

The fact that the Afghan state is subject to recurrent crises is evident. But what are the causes? Different interpretation stresses various aspects of the satuation from the meddling of unfriendly neighbors to the lack of internal resources, to the great heterogeneity of Afghan society. Dr. Giustozzi will critically review the different interpretations and re-assess them in the light of post-2001 developments in Afghanistan and recent research..
